The Hot Girl Effect and Networking
A few months ago, a friend of mine showed me this post from a blogger from Brown University. It humored and struck some interest in me, yet I didn't give it much thought.
Yesterday, upon reading a certain post on http://likealittle.com/ucsc/ the article popped into my head. This young man on likealittle posted a question. He asked something along the lines of should he approach a girl far out of his league? I messaged him and sent him the article above.
In the article above, the blogger talks about how the intimidation of talking to a hot girl is similar to the intimidation of talking to someone who has a higher status than you do. He states "Once a girl passes a certain degree of hotness, the amount of guys hitting on her drops dramatically." By this he means it is pretty simple approaching a decently looking girl. It gets harder approaching a pretty girl. It then becomes exponentially harder approaching a beautiful or hot girl. Therefore, if a girl is "hot" no one will bother to approach her due to the mindset that she is out of his league.
Similarly, he talks about an incident in which his friend approached the CFO of Goldman Sachs only to find out that he was quite personable and friendly. The two kept in touch. Because the CFO was considered such a highly respected individual, no one dared approach him due to the high level of intimidation. Yet this gentleman decided to take a leap of faith and talk to the man. It proved to be highly beneficial.
When someone seems "out of your league", all the more reason to approach them, respect them, and build a relationship with them. It seems you'd win more if you approach the girl rather than pass her up.
So, for the guys out there who have ever had a second thought about approaching a girl that caught your eye, take the chance and go for it. You have nothing to lose, only much to gain.
